Description

Monitoring data from the Ecopot projects: Determining the maximal and good ecological potential, as well as the current state of Flemish regional water bodies. The data contains phytoplankton counts of Flemish lakes and pools.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 14 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Each sampling event, an integrated sample was made based on 16 locations in each water body, where 1l water was taken from the surface (upper 30cm) and filtered over 240µm. If colonial or large algae were present, than one sub sample was not filtered.

Study Extent Water bodies were monthly sampled during the growing season of a one-year period.

Method step description:

  1. Each sampling event, an integrated sample was made based on 16 locations in each water body, where 1l water was taken from the surface (upper 30cm) and filtered over 240µm. If colonial or large algae were present, than one sub sample was not filtered.
  2. Phytoplankton in 250ml sub sampled were fixed using formaldehyde, with a final concentration of 4%, and samples were kept dark and cool until analysis. Microscopic analysis was executed according to the European CEN-standard (EN 15204, 2006). According to this method, a known volume of the sample was concentrated in a cuvet, after which different phytoplankton taxa were identified along a transect using an inverted microscope (Wild M40). When to much detritus was present, samples were coloured using Bengal red, to enable recognizing cells. For each sample, at least 250 individuals were counted, which was used to calculated to number of individuals per ml. Colonies were counted as one individual.
