"DEMNA-DNE: Occurrences of benthic macroinvertebrates in running waters of Wallonia, Belgium" is an occurrence-only dataset created by the Hydrobiology Unit of the Direction de la Nature et de l’Eau [Département de l'Etude du Milieu Naturel et Agricole (SPW-DEMNA-DNE)].

The data come from an active network of 440 sampling sites dedicated to the monitoring of the biological quality of the running waters of Wallonia. The monitoring network covers all streams (from brooks to largest rivers and canals) of the international hydrographic districts of the Meuse, the Scheldt, the Rhine and the Seine located within the Wallonia borders.

Sampling Methods

The standardized sampling procedure is described within Vanden Bossche & Usseglio-Polatera (2005, in Hydrobiologia, 551: 253-271). Taxa were generally identified at least to the family or genus levels. Due to poor sampling efficiency, poriferans, bryozoa and nematods are not reported within this publication.

Study Extent The monitoring network is composed of 440 sampling stations distributed among the running waters of the Wallonia region. The concerned habitats include brooks, streams, largest rivers and canals from the Walloon area of international hydrographic districts of the Meuse, the Scheldt, the Rhine and the Seine. The sampling season runs from may to october.
Quality Control The Department is ISO9001 certified.
