DEMNA-DNE : Early warning system on Introduced Species in Wallonia - Version 1.998

Early warning system on Introduced Species in Wallonia is a presence-only dataset aimed to deliver in real time the occurrence records of introduced species within Wallonia. Data are aggregated from various online recording systems that are maintenaid by the Département d'Étude du Milieu Naturel et Agricole (SPW-DEMNA).

Among these encoding systems, we find OFFH (Observations Faune Flore Habitats), the main occurrence encoding platform for the department experts and partners. But also specific surveys on exotic species (e.g. on the Giant Hogweed) open to the general public and thus based on citizen participation.

As this dataset aims to feed an alert system on exotic species, it also include non-validated data and attention should be paid to the validation status of the records!

If you have any return or remark, please do not hesitate to contact the Department for further details.

The Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Belgium, comprising all Lepidoptera of Belgium, provides information on the systematics and the distribution per province arranged in time-periods. The aim of the catalogue is also to depict all species in nature and as museum specimens, along with their pre-imaginal stages and larval host-plants.

This dataset also contains images and vernacular names.

More data (host plant informations, invasive status, ...) can be found on the project website: https://projects.biodiversity.be/lepidoptera

SPW ARNE-DNF : Occurrences of introduced species along roadsides in Wallonia - Version 1.20

Wallonia has a very large road network, which shows how important the shoulders, medians, embankments and ditches are for wildlife.

In some regions, they are even the last refuges for many organisms. Therefore, within the framework of the European Year of Nature Conservation 1995, the Directorate of Nature Conservation and Green Spaces of the Walloon Region has launched a pilot project for the ecological management of the edges of municipal roads. The objective: to make them more welcoming for wildlife. To date, several dozen municipalities have signed an agreement with the Walloon Region.

Within the framework of this agreement, the Region (Département de la Nature et des Forêts- SPW DNF) carries out a series of biological inventories along the roads. This set of occurrence data is limited to observations of non-native species that have been carried out within this framework.

A main contribution to this dataset was performed by Luc baily,at the time the convention was taken over by Natagriwal asbl. Since 2025, monthly publication of fresh records from BioGeoNET is now automated.

Please feel free to contact us for any return regarding this dataset or any other content gathered by the long-term 'Bords de Routes' propsections.

This dataset covers all relevant information on every Afrotropical moth species.

The zoogeographic area covered can be defined as the Africa continent south of the Sahara (i.e. excl. Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt), the islands in the Atlantic Ocean: Amsterdam Island, Ascension, Cape Verde Archipelago, Inaccessible Island, St. Helena, São Tomé and Principe, Tristan da Cunha, and the islands in the Indian Ocean: Comores (Anjouan, Grande Comore, Mayotte, Mohéli), Madagascar, Mascarene Islands (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues), Seychelles (Félicité, Mahé, Praslin, Silhouette, a.o.).

Furthermore, also those moth species occurring in the transition zone to the Palaearctic fauna have been included, namely most of the Arabia Peninsula (Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen with Socotra) but not Iraq, Jordan and further north. Also, some Saharan species have been included (e. g. Hoggar Mts. in Algeria, Tibesti Mts. in South Libya).

Utmost care was taken that the data incorporated in the database are correct. We decline any responsibility in case of damage to soft- or hardware based on information used in this website.

Observations.be - Non-native species occurrences in Wallonia, Belgium is a species occurrence dataset published by Natagora. The dataset contains over 190,000 occurrences of animal, plant and fungal non-native species, recorded by volunteers (citizen scientists), mainly since 2008. The occurrences are derived from the database http://www.observations.be, an initiative from the nature conservation NGO Natagora (https://www.natagora.be) in collaboration with Stichting Natuurinformatie and Natuurpunt. Standardized information regarding the occurrence's sex, reproductiveCondition, behavior, occurrenceRemarks, and samplingProtocol is included as well. Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/trias-project/natagora-alien-occurrences

Generalized and/or withheld information: for some occurrences, location information is generalized to grid cells, as requested by the observer (usually to avoid disturbance or collecting). Observer name, toponyms, and photographs are not included in the published dataset, but are known in the source database.

We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero waiver. We would appreciate however, if you read and follow these norms for data use (https://www.natagora.be/donnees_naturalistes_usage) and provide a link to the original data set whenever possible. If you use these data for a scientific paper, please cite the dataset following the applicable citation norms and/or consider us for co-authorship. We are always interested to provide more information or know how you have used the data, so please contact us via the contact information provided in the metadata or via biodata@natagora.be.

It is part of the early detection of exotic mosquito species (EMS) along high-risk introduction routes in Belgium, in which data are collected at defined locations (i.e. Points of Entry or PoE’s) using a standardised protocol. The MEMO dataset contains mosquito sampling counts performed between 2017 and 2020, and the MEMO+2020, an extension of the MEMO dataset, contains only Aedes albopictus mosquito trap counts performed in 2020. Here, they are published as a standardised Darwin Core Archive, which includes for each sampling event an eventID, a date, a location and a sampling protocol (in the event core); and an occurrenceID for each occurrence (tube), the number of collected individuals per tube, species status (present/absent), information on the identification and scientific name (in the occurrence extension). Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/BelgianBiodiversityPlatform/data-publication-ITG/issues

Here, it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each sampling event an eventID, date, location and sampling protocol (in the event core), and for each occurrence an occurrenceID, the number of recorded individuals, status (present/absent), identification and scientific name (in the occurrence extension).

The Observatoire wallon des Ambroisies (OWA) is a structure run by the Biodiversisty, Ecosystems and Landscape laboratory at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (ULiège) and funded by the Cellule permanente Environnement-Santé (SPW). It monitors and coordinates the management of invasive alien species of the genus Ambrosia sp. in the Walloon Region. Data are collected either directly from observers by e-mail/telephone/social networks, with photo validation, or via various encoding platforms (Observations.be; DEMNA surveys (SPW); iNaturalist; Pl@ntNET). Whenever possible, OWA contacts observers to verify presence, expand the dataset and organize a visit to initiate management. The OWA dataset is therefore fully compiled with data from participatory science.

DEMNA-DNE : Wild mammals in Wallonia - Version 1.6

'DEMNA-DNE : Wild mammals in Wallonia' is a presence-only occurrence dataset maintained by the Département d'Etude du Milieu Naturel et Agricole (SPW-DGARNE-DEMNA).
It contains validated mammal records from the department encoding system (Observatoire Faune Flore Habitats -OFFH - https://observatoire.biodiversite.wallonie.be/encodage/).

Bats are excluded from this dataset, as are non-native mammals observations, that are published through other dedicated datasets :

-DEMNA-DNE : Exotic animal occurrences in Wallonia, Belgium - https://doi.org/10.15468/bcuhep

-DEMNA-DNE : Early warning system on Introduced Species in Wallonia - https://doi.org/10.15468/dc2dyg

Sensitive species or confidential observations are made available with a reduced accuracy (4 km x 4 km IFBL ; 10km x10km for Lutra lutra).
Thus the georeferencing should mostly rely on the DwC term 'footPrintWKT' for a detailled cartography of the dataset as it contains both point and polygon verbatim positioning.

Returns on the dataset are more than welcome. Motivated request for unshared content or accurate records for sensitive species can be adressed at https://observatoire.biodiversite.wallonie.be/cmdd/.

Surveillance exotic mosquitoes in Belgium - Version 1.18

Vector-borne diseases are a specific group of infections that present a (re-)emerging threat to Europe and require particular attention. The recent notifications of autochthonous transmission of dengue fever and chikungunya fever cases in Europe show its vulnerability to these diseases in areas where the vector, the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus , is present. Strengthening surveillance of exotic mosquito species such as Ae. albopictus , Aedes aegypti , Aedes atropalpus , Aedes japonicus , Aedes koreicus and Aedes triseriatus , in areas at risk of importation or spread of mosquitoes and risk of virus transmission is therefore required. This is particularly important in the context of environmental and climate changes which might allow an increase of vector populations and virus amplification. The collection of information and data on vectors of public health (PH) significance are of crucial importance to understand the levels of risk that countries face, and to define the actions that need to be taken.

“Land and freshwater molluscs of Northern Spain” is an occurrence dataset containing 222 observations of 73 different taxa of land and freshwater molluscs encountered in Northern Spain (Vízcaya, Cantabria and Asturias). Various sites were inspected in a period between 2004 to 2019. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge on the ecology and distribution of these species such that it may aid conservation and research of these organisms in the future. The dataset is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each observation a stable occurrenceID, scientific name, date, and location of the observation, as well as info on lifeStage and organismQuantity, and supplementary remarks on the determination and the observation itself. We have released this dataset to the public domain under a CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/).

"Participatory inventory of the Himalayan balsam within the Dyle basin since 2008" is an occurrence-only dataset serving as an assessment of the invasion on the rivers of the Dyle basin by Impatiens glandulifra .

The majority of the data was collected between 2008 and 2010 in a participative way thanks to all the partners of Contrat Rivière Dyle-Gette (CRDG), the coordination of this large-scale inventory being ensured by the Coordination Unit at CRDG. Other data came of course to complete and specify this first inventory according to the multiple activities of the CRDG partnership and following the new detections made during the operations of management of the invasive alien species set up annually on the whole sub-basin since summer 2010.

This dataset describes the ORSTOM 2 collection (MNHN, Paris). In november-december 1980, the RV "Coriolis" carried out an oceanographic campaign in the south and west of Luçon, Philippines. The objective was to capture some female individuals of Neoglyphea opinata femelles (Arthropoda: Decapoda, see MUSORSTOM 1 campaign) and to improve the knowledge on the benthic fauna in the Philippines.

66 trawling operations were carried out, between 50 and 1950 m depth. Sampling has allowed to collect a series of new species. the samlping in the North of the Sibuyan sea, in various biotopes have allowed to record species which were new to the region.

The present dataset focuses on sea stars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) collected during the Musortom 2 campaign.

This dataset describes primary biodiversity data pertaining to pelagic diversity from the Bay of Toliara, Madagascar. The data is assembled in the framework of a specialized training program for students from Madagascar and its surrounding region (Pole de Formation Spécialisee, Institut Halieutique et des Sciences de la Mer). Additional data will be added along the years. Pelagic samples are taken in the Bay of Toliara using two ships and Plankton nets. The georeferencing is done using a GPS onboard ships, and samples are taken inside the lagoon (in two seperate locations); as well as on the outer fringe of the coral reef. The taxonomic determination are done by the students using a local field guide, under the supervision of their accompanying professor. Students enter data in Darwincore spreadsheet templates as provided by GBIF.

The “checklist of alien seed plants of D.R. Congo, based on evidence from herbarium collections” is a species checklist dataset published by the Botanic Garden Meise. It contains information on 436 alien plant species occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, based on evidence from herbarium collections (Bordar & Meerts 2022). The plant species were registered between 1869 and 2017. Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each species: the scientific name, kingdom, family and stable taxon identifier (in the taxon core), the year of first introduction and last assessment in Congo and the degree of establishment (in the distribution extension) and the native range and life form (in the description extension). Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/alien-csi/alien-flora-congo-checklist/issues.

We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero waiver. We would appreciate it if you follow the INBO norms for data use (https://www.inbo.be/en/norms-data-use) when using the data.

Knowledge of the taxonomic and functional biodiversity of both endemic and invading vector mosquito species as well as the factors driving change, is missing in Belgium. Acquiring this knowledge is an essential step towards understanding current risk and preparing for future treads. Therefore the objectives of the project MODIRISK (Mosquito vectors of disease: spatial biodiversity, drivers of change, and risk) were (1) to inventory endemic and invading mosquito species in Belgium considering environmental and taxonomic elements of biodiversity (http://www.gbif.org/dataset/6679952f-649b-4888-bd97-00daca4b8cc1) + (Collection), (2) to assess the population dynamics of endemic and invasive mosquito species and their interrelationship (This dataset) (3) to model mosquito biodiversity distribution at a one km resolution in the Benelux, and (4) to disseminate project outputs to the scientific community, end users and the general public.

During the first phase (years 2007-2008), the project focused on the inventory activities; setting–up laboratory experiments for studying life history traits of Culex pipiens in relation to temperature and the first selection of models based on the field results. Whilst during the second phase of the project (years 2009-2010) the focus was on the spatial model building and validation, on the longitudinal study (this dataset) and dynamics of selected indigenous and exotic species that were found during the inventory of the first phase and on more population genetic driven research

The longitudinal studies (2nd phase of the project) were conducted on selected indigenous and exotic species found during the first phase of the project. In total 33682 adult mosquitoes were collected at the four sites with the twelve traps.

The project was coordinated by the Institute of Tropical Medicine (http://www.itg.be/E) in Antwerp.

MODIRISK aims at studying biodiversity of mosquitoes and monitoring/predicting its changes, and hence actively prepares to address issues on the impact of biodiversity change with particular reference to invasive species and the risk to introduce new pathogens. This is essential in the perspective of the ongoing global changes creating suitable conditions for the spread of invasive species and the (re)emergence of vector-borne diseases in Europe. The main strengths of the project in the context of sustainable development are the link between biodiversity and health-environment, and its contribution to the development of tools to better describe the spatial distribution of mosquito biodiversity. MODIRISK addresses key topics of the global initiative Diversitas, which was one of the main drivers of the 'Research programme Science for a Sustainable Development' (SSD).

This dataset contains the monitoring data.

The project was coordinated by the Institute of Tropical Medicine (http://www.itg.be/E) in Antwerp.

A project which linked and extented five ongoing initiatives (Herbaria BR, M, MA, LE & UARK) to database myxomycete collections to create a global virtual herbarium using these databases via the GBIF network with an estimated total of 90,000 specimens, containing almost one third of all types. This joint virtual herbarium enables taxonomists to access sufficiently large series of specimens. For BR all the data of the Herbarium of Mrs Nannenga Bremekamp was made accessible, also the collections of Dr J. Rammeloo and other important collections were put on the web. In total 22.857 records are made accessible, of which 11.583 records with geographical coordinates.

Reference collections of plant material from Central Africa (DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi). Digitizing specimen information is the first crucial step in the realisation of a widely accessible ‘working list of known plant species’ for this region and is an important tool for repatriation of knowledge to the countries of origin. In this first stage, we focussed on three families: Rubiaceae, Balsaminaceae and Orchidaceae.

Land and freshwater molluscs of Gran Canaria (Spain) - Version 1.13

The Canary Islands (Spain) are an archipelago of the coast of northwest Africa. Gran Canaria is the third-largest island and located in the centre (Carracedo & Troll, 2016). The island contains a number endemic land snail species (e.g. Brito & Fraga, 2010). Freshwater molluscs are of smaller significance, but are also present. The research of land and freshwater molluscs of the Canaries mainly goes back to the 19th century with the famous works of Webb & Berthelot (1833), Shuttleworth (1852a, 1852b), Mousson (1872), Wollaston (1878), Mabille (1884), Odhner (1931), and others. Recent checklists are available (Groh, 1985; Bank et al., 2002; Brito & Fraga, 2010; Helixebas, 2019) and some more recent papers are cited further in this article. Nevertheless, taxonomic research is still largely based on these old works and many species were never found again since their description or the ecology or proper range is not known. This, together with the threats of global warming (Luque et al., 2013) and the increase of demographic and touristic pressure (Ibáñez et al., 1997) could (and probably already has) detrimental consequences for the survival of these species (see also the assessments on https://www.iucnredlist.org/). Therefore, there is an urgent need for information on ecology, distribution and taxonomy. “Land and freshwater molluscs of Gran Canaria (Spain)” is an occurrence dataset containing 389 observations of 62 different taxa of land and freshwater molluscs encountered on Gran Canaria, an island central in the Canarian archipelago (Spain). Various sites were inspected in a period between 1988 to 2020. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge on the ecology and distribution of these species on the island such that it may aid conservation and research of these organisms in the future.

Protected areas and the Natura 2000 network are keystones of the EU nature and biodiversity policy. However, alien plants do not stop their spread at the border of protected areas and invasive plants are reported to threaten many ecosystems, notably in aquatic and riparian areas.

A stratified sampling of the Natura 2000 network in Wallonia revealed that at least 41 alien plant species were present. 75 % of the sampled sites were invaded by at least one alien plant species.

Echinoderms occurence in a strongly contaminated Bay (Portman, Spain), using ROV and Scuba-diving surveys - Version 1.5

Context :
The bay of Portman and the adjacent shoreline are exposed to one of the most severe cases of sediments contamination by heavy metals of the whole Mediterranean Sea, due to decades of industrial mining activities which took place in the locality from 1951 to 1991.

This dataset countains fine scale distribution data for echinoderms collected around the bay of Portman (Murcia, Spain) by the Marine biology laboratory (ULB) in October 2013.

The fine scale cartography was realized for both the contamination gradient pattern and the benthic species distribution within the study area.

Environmental data are gathered into the Measurement or Facts extension. Most of these data concern heavy metal concentrations (Fe,Cu,Cd,Pb,Zn), for both the total and the finest (particle size <63µm) granulometric fractions of the sediments.

Benthic species distribution data are compiled in a DarwinCore archive. The major part of the data are derived from imagery-based identifications on video transects operated with a micro-ROV (VideoRay PRO3 GTO). But it also countains observations made by scuba divers, ad hoc observations, and sampled specimens for the purpose of physiological/ecotoxicological studies.

African Cichlid Fish database is part of the ENBI WP13 feasiblity study "Albertian Rift" (Collaborative project between the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, the Royal Museum for Central Africa and the National Botanical Garden). The data portal for the Albertine Rift study can be found at http://projects.bebif.be/enbi/albertinerift/common . This data base deals with the following research topic: Evolutionary histories of organisms and affects of palaeoclimatic changes: Species flocks of ancient freshwater lakes: African cichlid fishes (lakes Tanganyika, Malawi, Victoria and Kivu). Our primary area of interest is the study of the evolution of the cichlid species flocks from the East African Rift lakes. We investigate their phylogenesis, speciation, and the influence of lake level changes on their evolution. We also study the genetic structure of cichlid populations and the role of past and recent ecological barriers that determine population substructuring. Finally, we use molecular phylogenies to elucidate evolutionary patterns of morphological change and population genetic data to analyse the consequences of fisheries and environmental degradation. These approaches require both extensive field and laboratory phases of investigation. Our current research is based on an extensive tissue collection for cichlids from lakes Victoria, Kivu, Tanganyika and Malawi and uses mitochondrial and nuclear molecular markers to address evolutionary problems on selected taxa from these species flocks.

Royal Museum of Central Africa - True Fruit Flies (Diptera, Tephritidae) of the Afrotropical Region (ENBI wp13) - Version 2.0

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are one of the most economically important groups of insects in the Afrotropical Region. They cause millions of Euros of damage to fruits and vegetables, and are a major constraint to commercial and subsistence farming in the region. The family Tephritidae includes more than 5000 species worldwide, approximately 1400 species of which develop in fleshy fruits (Norrbom et al 1999). Nearly 250 of these species are capable of achieving pest status by feeding on plants of economic importance (White and Elson-Harris 1992). The Mediterranean fruit fly, or Medfly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is currently the most important of these pests from an invasive species perspective. Of African origin, it has spread to several other continents where it causes millions of Euros in damage. It also threatens other horticultural areas (such as California and Florida in the USA and regions in eastern Australia) resulting in very expensive detecting and monitoring programmes in these regions. The destructive association of several species with commercially grown fruit and vegetable crops makes them the subject of intensive agricultural research. But fruit flies are also biologically diverse and form a significant part of the biota of any region. Besides the several pest species, the large majority of the true fruit flies are limited to a small number of indigenous host fruits, mainly from trees and shrubs. Most of them are associated with forested areas, and can be used as indicator species for the biodiversity of a given area. In addition, several fruit fly larvae develop in other parts of host plants such as the stems or flowerheads. Fruit flies database is part of the ENBI WP13 feasibility study (Collaborative project between the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, the Royal Museum for Central Africa and the National Botanical Garden. The data portal for the ENBI WP13 study can be found at http://projects.bebif.be/enbi
