“Update of the giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) distribution in Wallonia” is a presence/absence dataset focusing on giant hogweed in the Senne basin, ;collected from the field in June 2021 all over Wallonia, Southern Belgium. Historical sites where the species was recorded previously were re-visited by the Contrats de Rivière de Wallonie to assess the outcome of management actions conducted in the past. The dataset includes absence records and should be considered with caution. Data compilation, cleaning and validation were performed by the Département de l’Étude du Milieu Naturel et Agricole (SPW – DGARNE - DEMNA).

The spread of invasive alien species (IAS) is not hampered by administrative borders. Aquatic IAS, in particular, spread rapidly through the hydrographic network. To effectively control such species requires coordinated management at higher spatial scales. LIFE RIPARIAS (Reaching Integrated and Prompt Action in Response to Invasive Alien Species) aims to achieve such coordination across regional borders in Belgium, supported by open data and open infrastructure for early warning and management reporting. LIFE RIPARIAS aims at improving decision making on IAS management, early warning systems and management reporting tools. To this end, it develops an evidence-based workflow, translating national management objectives into concrete actions in an efficient manner. Ultimately the project aims at increasing the conservation status of aquatic and riparian habitats. More information on LIFE RIPARIAS is available at the project homepage: https://www.riparias.be/. historical sites where the giant hogweed was previously recorded (see dataset “DEMNA-DNE : Exotic plant occurrences in Wallonia”) were re-visited to assess the outcome of management actions conducted since plant detection. Sites were visited by the Contrats de Rivière de Wallonie in June 2021, when giant hogweed is easy to detect irrespective of plant age (including seedlings). Plant presence/absence was assessed on visual information collected in this way. Data were afterwards compiled by Adrien Latli, SPW-DGARNE-DEMNA.
